The Governors struck first in Sunday’s First Financial Bank Battle of the Border matchup, when Ashley Whittaker found the back of the net in just the 17th minute of action.

Murray State would score in the 30th minute to send the match to the break tied, 1-1.

The second half and first overtime passed without anyone breaking the tie, but Murray State found the back of the net in the 105th minute to win the match in the second overtime.

The Governors got the scoring started in the 17th minute when Whittaker beat the Murray State defense to an Anna McPhie through ball. Whittaker hit a chip shot to the far post just over the head of the Murray State keeper to give the Govs an early lead. The goal was the second of the season for Whittaker, and the third of her career. It was McPhie’s second assist of her freshman campaign.

In the 29th minute, Murray State tied the match with the final goal of regulation. Powell made six first half saves to keep the score knotted up at one, and send it to the break tied. In the second half, Powell added another four saves, to send the match to overtime tied.

The Governors fired the only two shots of the first overtime, but neither Karley Roberts or Morgan Drawdy was able to best the Murray State keeper.

Powell made two saves to start the second overtime, but the Murray State attack was too much, and the Racers scored the game winner in the 105th minute. Powell made a season-best 11 saves, which is the second-highest single game save total of her career.

APSU coach Naomi Kolarova Thoughts

Opening Remarks
“We are obviously gutted to lose in overtime. The team worked hard to sneak a result against a top team in our conference, and almost did it.”

On the Governor defense
“We had a defensive game plan today that I think we executed really well.  We sat in wanting to prevent them from dribbling out and playing into their midfield. The team did a great job of it, being disciplined, stubborn, and patient. We were able to break up their attacks and force mistakes and loose balls. We worked really hard on and off the ball today and I am proud of the fight our team showed.”

Next Up For APSU Soccer

The APSU Women’s Soccer team will be back in action when they host Eastern Illinois for a 6:00pm, Friday, match. On Sunday, the Governors will wrap up the regular season, when they travel to Belmont for a 2:00pm match. Currently, the Govs sit in 7th place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, with the top-eight teams qualifying for the tournament.

The Govs trail sixth-place Belmont by a single point, and have a two-point lead over three teams – Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, and Morehead State – which are tied for 8th place in the OVC standings.
