Dodging the Roadkill: Riding Into Fall

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – Living in Tennessee presents very distinct seasons.  Our winters are cold, our springs are filled with storms and tornadoes, our summers are the epitome of heat and humidity, but then there’s the fall.

SWEET GLORIOUS FALL!

Without question, this is my favorite time of the year.  It always has been, even before I became a biker.  But I never thought the fall would be so fabulous until I started riding.

I absolutely LOVE getting out early in the morning, hitting the coffee shop, then taking off with no particular destination in mind.  Temperatures in the mid fifties to low seventies are the absolute best.

Dodging the Roadkill: The People I Meet

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – When I started this journey three years ago, the first thing I noticed about being a biker was the people I would meet.  As you know, the motorcycle is a magnet for attention.  There’s something about it that draws the attention of everybody.

As I would stop for gas, or take a break for something to eat, everybody had a motorcycle story.  It was and continues to be the best conversation starter on the planet.

I’m known for taking “selfies” with the people I meet on the road, and emphasizing how “I love the people I meet on this bike.”  Coming out of a career in broadcasting where everybody was selfish and superficial, it’s been so refreshing to meet real down to earth “genuine” people.

Dodging the Roadkill: Not Paying Attention

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – We had some good weather here in Middle Tennessee over the weekend, and yes, I hopped on my “road rocket” and took off.

Sunday, I participated in the Tuckessee H.O.G Chapters Polar Bear ride and while we really didn’t have polar bear temperatures, we had a great turnout and the ride was fabulous.

My favorite part of any group ride is when we all gather beforehand to learn the route and get instructions on where we’re going and when we will arrive at our destination.   It’s a time to visit with some brothers and sisters I don’t see as often and to “catch up” a little.  I love that time before a ride.  It’s part of this culture and it’s part of what makes it so special.

Dodging the Roadkill: Rattlesnake Saloon

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyTuscumbia, AL – My local H.O.G chapter organized a group ride to the Rattlesnake Saloon in Tuscumbia, Alabama.  I had never heard of the place, but was pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

Our ride began in Clarksville, TN and started down Highway 48/13, where we veered down Highway 13 towards Erin, TN, and Waverly, TN.  Highway 13 is a beautiful ride through some beautiful Tennessee countryside.

Once we cleared through Waverly, we passed the Loretta Lynn Ranch and made our way to Waynesboro, TN.  From there we hopped on the Natchez Trace Parkway, which is always a delightful ride.

Riding the Natchez Trace Parkway

Natchez Trace ParkwayTupelo, MS – The Natchez Trace, also known as “Old Natchez Trace,” is a 440 historic forest trail that links the Cumberland River, Tennessee River and Mississippi River.  The trail was used by Native Americans and later, by European and American Explorers.

Today, the Natchez Trace Parkway and bridge, commemorates the path used by early explorers.

It’s a recreational favorite among bikers, bicyclists, hikers, campers, boaters and just about anyone who enjoys the great outdoors, surrounded by incredible history.
