Norad Tracks SantaPeterson Air Force Base, CO – NORAD is tracking Santa’s flight across the world just like it’s predecessor did, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), for more than 50 years.

Back in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement misprinted the telephone number for children to call Santa. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations “hotline.” This began the tradition.

NASA’s Perseverance Rover to look below Mar’s Surface using Ground Penetrating Radar

 

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA – After touching down on the Red Planet February 18th, 2021, NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover will scour Jezero Crater to help us understand its geologic history and search for signs of past microbial life. But the six-wheeled robot won’t be looking just at the surface of Mars: The rover will peer deep below it with a ground-penetrating radar called RIMFAX.

Unlike similar instruments aboard Mars orbiters, which study the planet from space, RIMFAX will be the first ground-penetrating radar set on the surface of Mars.

The physics and classics double-major will conduct a multifaceted and large research project using ground-penetrating radar at an ancient Roman villa in Romania.

NASA’s Cassini Spacecraft data gives new insights into Titan’s Lakes

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationWashington, D.C. – On its final flyby of Saturn’s largest moon in 2017, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft gathered radar data revealing that the small liquid lakes in Titan’s northern hemisphere are surprisingly deep, perched atop hills and filled with methane.

The new findings, published April 15th in Nature Astronomy, are the first confirmation of just how deep some of Titan’s lakes are (more than 300 feet, or 100 meters) and of their composition. They provide new information about the way liquid methane rains on, evaporates from and seeps into Titan – the only planetary body in our solar system other than Earth known to have stable liquid on its surface.

NASA captures radar images of asteroid 2003 SD220 as it approached Earth

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA – The December 2018 close approach by the large, near-Earth asteroid 2003 SD220 has provided astronomers an outstanding opportunity to obtain detailed radar images of the surface and shape of the object and to improve the understanding of its orbit.

The asteroid will fly safely past Earth on Saturday, December 22nd, 2018 at a distance of about 1.8 million miles (2.9 million kilometers). This will be the asteroid’s closest approach in more than 400 years and the closest until 2070, when the asteroid will safely approach Earth slightly closer.

NASA to launch three CubeSat satellites on next International Space Station resupply mission

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA – This weekend, when the next cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station lifts off from NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, it will be carrying among its supplies and experiments three cereal box-sized satellites that will be used to test and demonstrate the next generation of Earth-observing technology.

NASA has been increasing its use of CubeSats — small satellites based on several configurations of approximately 4 x 4 x 4-inch cubes — to put new technologies in orbit where they can be tested in the harsh environment of space before being used as part of larger satellite missions or constellations of spacecraft.

NASA releases images of Phaethon Asteroid taken by Arecibo Radar

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationWashington, D.C. – After several months of downtime since Hurricane Maria struck the island of Puerto Rico, the Arecibo Observatory Planetary Radar has returned to normal operation, providing the highest-resolution images to date of near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon during its December 2017 close approach to Earth.

The radar images, which are subtle at the available resolution, reveal the asteroid is spheroidal (roughly ball-shaped) and has a large concavity, or depression, at least several hundred meters in extent near its equator, and a conspicuous dark, circular feature near one of the poles. Arecibo’s radar images of Phaethon have resolutions as fine as about 250 feet (75 meters) per pixel.

Dodging The Roadkill: Rain Riding

 

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – I’ve only been on this journey since January, 2016.  I’ve avoided rain like the plaque.  All of my trips were planned around the weather forecast.  If I was visiting friends in Texas, then I would check the weather between here and there and if there wasn’t a clear path, then I waited until there was.

What a WHIMP!

The bottom line is that the more you ride and the more miles you log, you are GOING to ride in the rain!  I don’t mean a drizzle or two, I mean a full on downpour.

The decision to continue riding during a storm is entirely up to the rider, and you don’t want to be full on STUPID, but sometimes you just get caught.  If you’ve prepared to encounter the rain, meaning you have “geared up” for it, then it’s no big deal.  You carry on.
