Clarksville, TN – For several years, local businessman and Austin Peay State University alumnus James Maynard (’56) has been a supporter of APSU.
He recently created the Maynard Family Endowment Scholarship, which provides financial assistance annually to a student from Montgomery County pursing a business degree at APSU.
“I am excited about the relationship I have had with APSU for many years,” Maynard said at a groundbreaking ceremony held August 17th behind the Hemlock Semiconductor Building on Eighth Street.
The two-story classroom building, designed by Rufus Johnson Associates, is projected to open in the spring of 2014.
The new facility – which will house the APSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the APSU Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, both having growing academic programs – will join the Sundquist Science Building and the Hemlock Semiconductor Building to create a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) core on the eastern side of the campus.
Shortly after graduating from APSU, at the age of 22, Maynard began an impressive entrepreneurial career by opening the Sportsman’s Store on Cumberland Drive. He later sold that business and joined his family in operating a Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Opel dealership at the corner of College and Ninth streets.
In the late 1970s, he sold his part of the dealership and started building apartments and homes through Maynard Construction Inc.
