Lady Govs end losing streak, down Skyhawks

APSU Governors LogoAustin Peay State University women’s basketball team ended its seven-game losing streak with a 63-45 Ohio Valley Conference victory against UT Martin, Thursday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (4-12, 3-2 OVC) found itself trailing a feisty, but shorthanded, UT Martin squad by five points, 18-13, 12 minutes into the contest. However, the Lady Govs closed the half with a 19-2 run to take a 32-20 halftime lead.

UT Martin (2-11, 0-4), which used only six players and had eight dressed for the contest, made four consecutive three-point field goals to start the second half and cut the lead to five points, 37-32, with 16:15 remaining.

The Lady Govs responded with a 16-3 scoring burst over the next 6:15 to build an 18-point, 53-35, lead and were not threatened the game’s remainder.

Senior Nicole Jamen led the Lady Govs in both scoring (11) and rebounding (14) as she posted her season’s fifth double-double. Junior Ashley Herring, junior transfer Dalila Thomas and sophomore Jasmine Rayner each chipped in 10 points.

Alecia Weatherly led the Skyhawks with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Austin Peay continues its three-game conference homestand when it hosts Murray State in a 2 p.m., Saturday contest.
