Fort Campbell Soldier Dies after Collapsing during Physical Training

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – A 101st Airborne Division Soldier died April 18th, after he collapsed during physical training on Fort Campbell, KY.

Specialist James Lewis Smith, 29, of Conway, AR was a Water Treatment Specialist assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).  He joined the Army in May 2005 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2011. 

   

His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon and Driver and Mechanics Badge.

Smith is survived by his wife, Rachel Smith; daughter, Hannah Smith; father, James Smith and mother Carol Smith, all of New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Smith’s death is currently under investigation.
