Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team will feature four freshmen for the 2014-15 season.

Head coach Kirk Kayden has announced the signing of Colton Godwin, an Ocala, FL, native who has enjoyed a superb high school and junior golf career.

Godwin joins Jamie Arens, an Ohio native who recently competed in the U.S Public Links championship in Newton, Kansas; Jonas Vaisanen, a Karby Finland native who is member of the Finland Boys National Team, and Luis Navarrete, of Guadalajara, Mexico, who was one of top-rated players in the 2013 Mexican National Junior Golf Rankings.

Godwin competed for Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala. As a sophomore in 2011, he helped lead his team to the district and region championship with Godwin recording low score (73) in the district tourney. As a junior he averaged 38-strokes-per-nine and as a senior he dropped his average to 36 while capturing his second district championship in three seasons.

Godwin’s play has even elevated further since last fall’s prep season. In fact, in May he captured the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s College Prep Series against a field of 61 golfers at the University of Florida Golf Course. Godwin shot rounds of 68 and 69 to cruise to a four-stroke win.

He also received an invitation to the prestigious Henry N. Camp invitational, finishing the three- day event at 2-under and a 10th-place tie. He also qualified a second time for the Florida State Amateur, tying for 31st with scores of 73-73-74-76 at Quail Valley Golf Club.

Godwin also tied for 14th place at the 2014 Florida Boys Junior Championship with scores of 66-72-73. He also recently earned a spot with a 71 in the Florida Amateur Match Play Championship, to be held July 31st-August 4th at TwinEagles Club in Naples, FL.

“Colton is a wonderful late addition for 2014-15 team,” Kayden said. “He has played very well this summer with very good finishes in both the Florida State Am and the Florida State Junior.

“I could tell right away that he would be a good fit for us. His enthusiasm of the game is at a high level. I also like his ability to shoot low scores in competition.”

With the Godwin signing, the Govs promise to be a young team in 2014-15 after losing four seniors, including four-year stars Marco Iten and Anthony Bradley. Returning will be senior Tucker Wallace along with juniors Chris Baker, Austin Kramer and Cleve Guinn and sophomore Erik Hedberg.
