Europa scientists have considered the possible plumes on Europa a promising way to investigate the habitability of Jupiter’s icy moon, especially since they offer the opportunity to be directly sampled by spacecraft flying through them. ![]() This illustration of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa depicts a cryovolcanic eruption in which brine from within the icy shell could blast into space. A new model proposing this process may also shed light on plumes on other icy bodies. (Justice Wainwright) «Read the rest of this article» Sections: Technology | No Comments

NASA studies Mars Canyons for signs of liquid waterWritten by Guy Webster
The study published today investigated thousands of these warm-season features in the Valles Marineris region near Mars’ equator. Some of the sites displaying the seasonal flows are canyon ridges and isolated peaks, ground shapes that make it hard to explain the streaks as resulting from underground water directly reaching the surface. ![]() Blue dots on this map indicate sites of recurring slope lineae (RSL) in part of the Valles Marineris canyon network on Mars. RSL are seasonal dark streaks that may be indicators of liquid water. The area mapped here has the highest density of known RSL on Mars. TDOT Crews Ready to “Beet” Ice and Snow This WinterNew Tools to Help Keep Tennessee Roads Free of Ice and Snow This Season
“Although we don’t typically see severe winters in the southeast, even small amounts of snow or ice can cripple our transportation system and create dangerous conditions for motorists,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “This year, TDOT is testing a number of new weapons that all have the potential to help clear roads of ice and snow faster while also saving valuable time, manpower, and money.” “The beet juice compound will help the salt stick to the roadway for a longer period of time which will make the salt and salt brine more effective and will help reduce the amount of salt used by TDOT,” said TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges. “The beet juice should also help reduce the amount of salt that bounces off the roadway when applied by the trucks.” «Read the rest of this article» Sections: News | No Comments
Brine Your Thanksgiving Turkey
To brine a turkey you will need a large pot that will hold the whole bird in the brine and a space in the frig large enough to store it for a day. You can improvise if your frig isn’t big enough. I have used buckets of ice and placed another bucket full of turkey and brine in it. For the last two years though, I have used a large, new trash bag to put the bird and brine in. I sit the bag with brine and turkey into a large cooler and surround the bag with ice. When the ice melts, I take the cooler to the back steps and let it drain, then fill it up with ice again. You want to make sure the bird stays at or below 40*F. I always start my turkey out defrosting on Saturday. By Wednesday it is usually thawed and ready for a 24 hour stint in the brine. «Read the rest of this article» Sections: Arts and Leisure | No Comments
TDOT Adds to Winter Weather ArsenalTennessee in Motion is a monthly column by Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely As Tennesseans enjoy the cooler temperatures and changing leaves of fall, TDOT Maintenance forces across the state are focused on the winter months ahead. Although we don’t typically see severe winters in the southeast, even small amounts of snow or ice can cripple our transportation system and create dangerous conditions for motorists. And, the wet weather pattern we’ve seen for much of 2009 makes one wonder if this could be a winter to remember. When battling a winter weather event, time and resource limitations can be as formidable an opponent as the snow and ice that may be falling. This year, TDOT is testing a number of new weapons that all have the potential to save valuable time, manpower, and money. «Read the rest of this article» Sections: News | No Comments
