Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – She was simply known as “Champ.” Never was a nickname more appropriate and never did one person do more to help transform a struggling program into a conference contender.

Jenny Hazelwood was seeking players who could impact her program for the 2008 season. After watching the Lady Govs struggle to an 8-25 record during her first APSU season, the Lady Govs coach knew she needed an influx of talent. Hazelwood had some pieces in place but knew the rebuilding process also needed a mix of young talent and a veteran who could provide an offensive jolt.

One percent all the difference for Lady Govs volleyball in 2010

Austin Peay State University GovernorsOne percent improvement does not seem like a lot, but the Austin Peay State University volleyball team hopes compounding that one percent every day during the upcoming season will result in an opportunity for the team’s first Ohio Valley Conference championship in 19 years.

The Lady Govs reached the end of two-a-days, Thursday, and finished the week with a Friday morning practice at the Dunn Center. They now begin a critical stretch of seven days leading up to the Lady Govs first regular-season competition, next Friday, at the Mississippi State Maroon Classic.

Before it begins that final stretch of practices, Austin Peay will first work through a busy Saturday schedule. The Lady Govs  began the day by participating in the “Run for the Fallen” at Fort Campbell’s Waholi Pavilion. They returned to campus for media day activities, which began 12:45pm in the Dunn Center. The team then made its way to the Memorial Health Building (The Red Barn) for a 2:00pm practice that will concluded their day.

A preseason look at Lady Govs volleyball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University women’s volleyball team has a thankful distinction from other Fall sports reporting to campus for preseason activities – the heat will not be an issue.

However, with summer graduation occupying the Dunn Center and a delay on getting the Memorial Health Building ready for use, first-year head coach Haley Janicek has her own set of problems. For the time being, volleyball preseason camp is taking place in the Foy Center, using one of the three courts designated for student activities.
