Turnovers cost Govs in loss to Eastern Illinois

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCharleston, IL – Running backs Terrence Holt and Ryan White each had more than 100-yards rushing, but four turnovers proved costly as Austin Peay State University’s football team lost 28-10 at Eastern Illinois, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Panthers scored three of their four touchdowns on drives following Austin Peay turnovers to record their season’s first win–the fourth TD came after a short punt into the a strong wind.

The loss was the Govs fifth straight, dropping them to 2-6 overall. The loss also means the Governors will endure their third straight losing season.

Austin Peay got on the board first, with 5:16 to play in the opening frame, on a 35-yard Stephen Stansell field goal. The rest of the first half, however, belonged to the Panthers, especially the final two minutes.

Eastern Illinois would score three times before the break, the first two following Austin Peay fumbles and the final first-half TD, with 11.5 seconds till halftime, after an interception. The final two first-half score came on passes of 52 and 39 yards from Jimmy Garoppolo to Chris Wright.

In the second half, Holt and White attempted to run the Govs back into the game. Holt scored the Govs only touchdown in the third quarter, capping a 10-play, 56-yard drive, with an 11-yard scamper.

With the Govs sticking to the ground game, the needed to be extremely efficient to get back in the game. However, fumbles and turnovers halted the comeback bid. 

Holt finished with 130 yards on 16 carries, while White had 26 carries for 107 yards. It was the first time since the season-opener against Cumberland for two backs to rush for more than 100 yards in the same game.
