Govs season comes to close with loss to Georgia Tech

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAtlanta, GA – Austin Peay State University was swamped early by Georgia Tech and saw its 2011 campaign come to a close with a 12-2 loss, Sunday, in Atlanta Regional action of the NCAA Baseball Championship at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Georgia Tech (42-20) scored three runs in the first and scored in six of its nine innings. The Yellow Jackets posted four home runs against Governors pitching. Designated hitter Daniel Palka had a first-inning two-run blast, catcher Zach Evans led off the second with a solo home run, third baseman Matt Skole had a leadoff homer in the fifth and first baseman Josh Davies wrapped up the barrage with a two-run shot in the seventh.

Austin Peay (34-24) saw its offense struggle for the second consecutive day as Georgia Tech starter Buck Farmer kept it scoreless through seven innings. The Govs broke up Farmer’s shutout bid in the eighth when first baseman John Hogan reached on an error that allowed two runs to score.

Farmer (11-3) allowed two runs on five hits in a complete-game effort. He struck out nine, including two in the ninth inning to close the game.

Austin Peay starter Zach Toney (6-3) suffered the loss two days after picking up the save in an APSU victory against Georgia Tech. He surrendered five runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings. Senior Ryne Harper came in and threw 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits while striking out five.
