Alonja Thomas’ 30 points leads Kenwood High Lady Knights past West Creek

Kenwood High SchoolClarksville, TN – Kenwood High School’s Alonja Thomas scored a game-high 30 points, December 13th, to lead the Lady Knights to a 69-60 District 10-AA victory over the West Creek Lady Coyotes.

Ten of Thomas’ 30 points came in the key third quarter, as Kenwood (3-5, 2-1 District 10-AAA) broke open a one-point contest at halftime, 31-30, out to a 49-38 advantage after three quarters of play.

Thomas would open the third by scoring the first six points of the period, over a span of 1:10 to get Kenwood a 37-30 lead.

West Creek (4-5, 2-1 District 10-AAA) would get as close as five points, 39-34, following a bucket by Tyisha Worthy with 5:09 left in the third, but Kenwood would run off six straight points to go up double figures, 45-34, with 3:07 left.

West Creek would get it under double figures only one more time in the period, 45-36, before Kenwood closed out the quarter up 11 points, 49-38.

The final quarter would see Kenwood go up by as many as 15 points, 55-40 with 5:10 left in the game, but West Creek’s Madison Kurtz came off the bench to hit four 3s in the final 4:56 to cut the margin back to as close as eight points, but finished the night losing by nine, 69-60.

Kurtz finished with 14 points.

In the first half, Kenwood led for all but the first minute – but were never able to pull away from the Lady Coyotes.

The Lady Knights would take the lead, 4-3, with 7:00 left in the first quarter on a jumper from Thomas.

Kenwood would expand the lead to 11-5, with 4:13 left in the opening period, but saw West Creek score four straight to cut it to two points, 11-9 at the 3:31 mark.

The Lady Knights would get a three from Jasmine Johnson to make it a five point game, 14-9, with 3:10 left.

West Creek would be hampered in the first half with missed free throws, as the Lady Coyotes missed two straight one-and-ones that could cut into the Kenwood lead, but a basket by Thomas would push the Lady Knights out to its biggest lead of the game, 16-9, with 1:30 left in the period.

But West Creek would close the quarter by scoring the final three points to trail after eight minutes of play, 16-12.

The second quarter would see the Lady Knights extent its lead out to as many as eight points twice in the period, but West Creek closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to trail by one at intermission, 31-30.
