APSU Women’s Golf places Third at Greenbrier Invitational

APSU Women's GolfLexington, KY – Golf is occasionally a frustrating sport, never more than when you do your best and are usurped by a team having its best possible day. So it went for Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s golf, which shot a final-round 303 but dropped to third at the Greenbrier Invitational after an exemplary round by Belmont.

Lipscomb (908) won the team event, but Belmont’s final-round 297—the best team round of the tournament—moved the Bruins into runner-up position at 912, with the Govs (917) in third ahead of Tennessee Tech (931) and host Morehead State (945).

“[The final round] was our best round of the tournament and so far, our best of the season,” said Austin Peay head coach Jessica Cathey. “We can’t control what everyone else does, but we fought with everything we had today.”

Senior Meghann Stamps led a trio of Govs in the top-10, taking third with a 221 (74-71-76). Her 37 pars were the second-most in the tournament, while her 2.83 stroke average on par-3 holes made her one of six players to average under-par for the tournament on par-3 offerings.

Sophomores Taylor Dedmen and Shelby Darnell tied for sixth at 227. Dedmen (74-79-74) rallied after a second-round 79, leading the Govs with nine birdies over the 54-hole affair and leading the tournament with a 4.83 stroke average on par-5 holes. Darnell (77-76-74) elevated her play in all three rounds, with her final-round 74 her best round since the 2018 Town and Country Invitational. She rallied from a double-bogey on her first hole, the par-4 No. 3, and shot even-par for the remainder of the final round.

“Meghann made the turn at two-under [in the final round],” Cathey said. “She had a rough patch for a couple of holes and then got it turned around. She played 50 holes of really good golf.

Taylor and Shelby were both consistent for us. Those three kept us in it and kept us alive. We’ve got some work to do ahead of the home tournament but we’re confident we can fix those minor details.”

Juniors Riley Cooper and Andrea Presilla closed out the day for the Govs. Cooper (80-83-82—245; t-34th) showcased her ability to get up and down with 30 pars, while Presilla (84-83-79—246; 39th) joined Darnell in round-over-round improvements, with the final-round 79 representing a season-low.

The Govs will take a week off before hosting the 2019 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, September 30th-October 1st, at Clarksville Country Club.
