Tennessee State ParksTennessee – As you make plans for the coming weekend, consider the recreational quality and outstanding value of Tennessee State Parks. From hiking to swimming to golfing to canoeing – most activities are free and there’s something for every age and ability.

Some upcoming Tennessee State Parks events are: Looking Back: The Civil War in TN, Liberty: The Saga of Sycamore Shoals and Astronomy Weekends.

Finding a state park in your own backyard is easy to do and you don’t have to spend a lot of gas money to get there!

Here are just a few state park events in your area.

Johnsonville State Historic Park

Looking Back: The Civil War in TN on July 11th & 12th

Be a part of history! Archivists and conservators from the Tennessee State Library and Archives are creating a virtual exhibit commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Tennessee and will be at the park Thursday and Friday, July 11th and 12th.

Individuals may schedule an appointment, and conservators will digitally copy and assist in the preservation of your Civil War era manuscripts, artifacts, memorabilia and photographs.

The images will become a virtual exhibit commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Tennessee. Memorabilia includes photographs, letters, diaries, weapons, maps and more. Details visit www.tn.gov/tsla/cwtn.

Sycamore Shoals State Park

Liberty: The Saga of Sycamore Shoals on July 11th-13th

Tennessee’s official outdoor drama is presented by local performers against the backdrop of Fort Watauga. See the Revolution as told by the Overmountain Men: colonists who defied British law and settled on Cherokee lands.

These settlers formed an independent government, made treaties with the Cherokee, defended their homes, and fought a British army at the epic battle of King’s Mountain. Bleacher seating is available in the amphitheater. Thursday – Saturday at 7:30pm ET.

Additional dates: July 18th-20th, and 25th-27th. Sponsored by Friends of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. Admissions fee.

Fall Creek Falls State Park

Astronomy Weekends on July 12th & 13th

Set your sight to the stars during Astronomy Weekend! Join us for discussions regarding constellations, lunar lore, and our brightest star, the Sun. Telescope viewing will also be offered, weather permitting. Additional dates Aug. 9/10.
