Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University used a stifling pressure defense to close the first half on a 21-4 run as it defeated Westminster, 89-42, in exhibition basketball action, Monday night, in Dave Aaron Arena.
Leading 26-24 with 6:59 remaining in the half, the Governors resorted to a three-quarter’s court trapping defense that forced six turnovers and limited the Blue Jays to only two made field goals in that stretch.’
Junior Tyshwan Edmondson scored nine during the stretch to finish with 16 points, tying fellow juco transfer Melvin Baker for game-scoring honors. Both Baker and Edmondson finished 7-of-11 from the floor. A third juco transfer, Josh Terry, added 12 points on five-of-seven shooting. He also collected five steals.
APSU’s other double-figure scorer was point guard Caleb Brown, who scored 10 points on three-of-three shooting while dishing out five assists. All 14 Governors played in the contest, with 12 scoring at least one basket.
Dan Hohenstein led the Blues Jays with 11 points and five assists.
The Governors will open the regular season, 7:30pm, Friday, when they travel to St. Louis to face the Billikens in Chaifetz Arena.
