Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

Spring/Summer Recreation Guides

Want to find out when pools open or how to reserve a park pavilion for your child’s birthday party? All this information and more can be found in our 2011 Spring/Summer Recreation Guide that is now available. Pick up your FREE copy at our main office on Public Square or any of our three community centers.

Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center Grand Opening

The Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center, located at 120 Duncan Street, will open to the public with a grand opening commemoration event, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and April 10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All ages are welcome to visit and explore the new Interpretive Center featuring several multi-media interpretive exhibits. Visitors can also learn more about the fascinating chain of events that unfolded on this very site during the Civil War from the various living history stations located around the fort and over the weekend. Saturday evening will also feature a night-time canon firing at approximately 7:45 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Because of limited parking, all visitors to the weekend’s event must park at the Two Rivers Business Center, at 690 Riverside Drive (old Convergys lot), then ride a Clarksville Transit System shuttle to the park.

Register TODAY for the 33rd Annual Queen City Road Race

33rd Annual Queen City Road RaceThe Queen City Road Race is a Clarksville tradition promoting fitness and fun for all ages. The 5K race route takes runners through the streets of Historic Downtown Clarksville beginning and ending at Austin Peay State University’s Governors Stadium while the One Mile Movement takes you on an exciting tour of a portion of the APSU campus.

Registration is simple, those participating in the 5K have an option to register online or in person. Online registration has no extra fee for the 5K race. Participants in the Wilma Rudolph 5K Relay and One Mile Movement can register by mail or in person at the Clarksville Parks and Recreation.

The Queen City Road Race is not just a running competition, but a promotion for fitness and health in the Clarksville community. Like last year, the race will include a non-competitive, one-mile event. Participants can complete the mile at any speed or rate they choose. It doesn’t matter if you run, walk or skip the mile; just as long as you are up and moving!

Get Outdoors with a Bird Identification class at the Clarksville Greenway

Clarksville GreenwayJoin us at the Clarksville Greenway, located at the end of Pollard Road, from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. Saturday, April 16, for a bird identification class led by APSU professor, Katherine DeWein. For information on other outdoor activities in the Clarksville area, visit www.outdoorclarksville.com. This new site features a monthly blog, calendar of upcoming events and links to outdoor groups.

Hop on over to the Heritage Park Baseball Fields for the 2011 Spring Eggstravaganza!

Spring EggstravaganzaJoin us from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 23, for games, face painting, a three-legged race, an egg-on-a-spoon race, bunny hop race and the hunting of more than 30,000 eggs. All races will be from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. at the larger field for ages 12 and under. Kids can even pay a visit to the Easter Bunny himself!

We are also looking for people or organizations interested in volunteering their time to help make this event a success. Volunteers can choose from two time slots; noon to 3 p.m. or 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Contact the Parks & Recreation office at (931) 645-7476 to volunteer.
