Austin Peay State University GovernorsAtlanta, GA – When Colorado Rockies reliever Matt Reynolds was asked earlier Wednesday about whether he had met Atlanta Braves pitcher and fellow Austin Peay alum George Sherrill, his answer was was “No, I have intended to go over and introduce myself.”

That meeting occurred Wednesday afternoon prior to the third game of the Rockies-Braves series in Atlanta’s Turner Field.

Sherrill, like Reynolds, is a lefthander reliever. The Memphis native, who spent five years playing independent before signing his first affiliated minor league contract, is now in his eighth season at the major league level and first with the Braves. The 34-year-old previously pitched for Seattle, Baltimore and Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old Reynolds, meanwhile, is in his first full season with the Rockies after spending the latter part of 2010 as a Colorado relief pitcher.

The lefties comprised two of Austin Peay’s four pitchers at the major league level. A.J. Ellis currently is a catcher with the Dodgers-Sherrill and Ellis played together last season-while Shawn Kelley is a pitcher with the Seattle Mariners. Kelley, however, has not pitched this season while continuing his recovery from partial Tommy John surgery.
