Brewers announce 2011 Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year Awards

INF Taylor Green and RHP Mike Fiers Named Recipients of the Robin Yount Performance Player and Pitcher of the Year Awards, Respectively

Nashville SoundsMilwaukee, WI – The Milwaukee Brewers today announced the recipients of the 2011 Robin Yount Performance Awards, which recognizes the Brewers Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year. 

Infielder Taylor Green was selected as the club’s Minor League Player of the Year and right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers (pronounced Fires) was named the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Green, 24, spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Nashville, where he batted .336 with 22 home runs and 88 RBI in 120 games and was selected to the All-Pacific Coast League Team. Green had his contract selected by the Brewers on August 27th and made his Major League debut on August 31st vs. St. Louis. He singled as a pinch hitter off Jake Westbrook in his first big league at-bat. In 11 games with the Brewers, he is batting .333 (8-for-24) with three doubles and one RBI. Green played in three games with Double-A Huntsville to start the season prior to his promotion to Nashville (.364, 0hr, 3rbi).

Green was also selected as the Brewers Minor League Player of Year in 2007 when he batted .327 with 14 home runs and 86 RBI in 111 games with Class-A West Virginia.  He was drafted by the Brewers in the 25th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of Cypress College.  He was signed by Director of Amateur Scouting Bruce Seid.

Fiers, 26, split the season between Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville. He went 5-3 with a 2.64 ERA (61.1ip, 18er) and five saves in 22 games, 8 starts, with Huntsville and was 8-0 with a 1.11 ERA (64.2ip, 8er) in 12 games, 10 starts, with Nashville.  In 18 starts between Nashville and Huntsville, he went 11-2 with a 1.43 ERA (107.1ip, 17er). He led the Brewers minor-league system with 13 victories and a 1.86 ERA in 34 games this past season.  He earned Southern League Pitcher of the Week honors from June 27th – July 3rd and Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors from August 29th – September 5th.

Fiers, who had his contract selected by Milwaukee on September 10th, was drafted by the Brewers in the 22nd round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Nova Southeastern University in Florida. He was signed by area scout Charlie Sullivan.
