Clarksville, TN –Austin Peay State University’s soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie in its Ohio Valley Conference match, September 29th at Morgan Brothers Field, versus Southeast Missouri State University, despite controlling play for most of the 110 minutes played in a steady rain.

“It’s disappointing to not get the result that I think we put ourselves into with a chance to win the game,” Austin Peay coach Kelley Guth said. “We didn’t execute with the opportunities that we had.
“Give credit to SEMO, they came out on the first series of the second half and put in a quick goal on us right off kickoff and from that point on we just didn’t finish.”
Austin Peay would have chance after chance to retake the lead, including a golden chance by freshman Megan Sanchez, who’s shot in the 61st minute, got by the Redhawks keeper, but was cleared by a SEMO defender.
Overall, the Lady Govs outshot the Redhawks 13-1 after the tying goal, to finish with a 16-6 advantage for the match.
“You have to score to win,” Guth said. “I thought every piece of the puzzle was there today. We combined well and created very high-quality scoring opportunities; we just didn’t have that final touch.”
Austin Peay scored it lone goal in the first half, in the 40th minute on a penalty kick by senior Tatiana Ariza, coming after fellow senior Andy Quiceno was taken down in the box by a SEMO defender.
The penalty kick goal is the eighth in Ariza’s career, a school record.
Sophomore Nikki Filippone and Shoaff split time in the goal for Austin Peay, with Filippone recording two first-half saves and Shoaff one second-half save.
Ashton Aubuchon had seven save for the Redhawks.
Despite the draw, Austin Peay remains unbeaten through its first two games OVC matches for the first time since 2008, while also earning the program’s best nine-game start.Austin Peay returns to action next weekend, as they hit the road for a pair of OVC matches, starting with a 3:00pm October 4th match in Cookeville, TN versus Tennessee Tech University, followed by a 2:00pm match in Nashville, TN on October 6th versus Belmont University.
