Nashville Sounds give up five in the fifth to Round Rock Express for 5-4 loss

Nashville Sounds Swept For First Time Since June of Last Season

Nashville SoundsRound Rock, TX – Behind a five run fifth inning, the Round Rock Express completed the sweep over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday at Dell Diamond, 5-4.

In the early stages of the game, it looked like the Sounds were going to run away with this one. Through four innings, the Sounds first two hitters Alden Carrithers and Joey Wendle were a combined 6-for-6 scoring all four Nashville runs. Wendle was on a historic pace, finding himself just a homerun away from the cycle. Jason Pridie (2 RBI) and Kent Matthes (RBI) were the beneficiaries of the frequent runners on base.

Athletics veteran Jarrod Parker made his third rehab start since missing the 2014 season with Tommy John surgery.

The veteran right-hander was cruising through his first four innings in a Nashville uniform giving up just two hits and striking out four. Then, suddenly, the Sounds good fortunes turned.

Parker gave up a single and his only walk of the game to start the fifth. Trever Adams then cut the lead to 4-3 with his second homerun of the season. Parker would get the next batter, Guilder Rodriguez, to groundout before being pulled. Ryan Verdugo came out of the pen for the third time this season – he has also started twice – and recorded two K’s to get out of the inning. Unfortunately for Nashville, the K’s came after Tomas Telis took Verdugo deep, giving the Express a 5-4 lead.

Wendle had two chances at becoming the fourth Sounds hitter to ever hit for the cycle.  He struck out when he was unable to check his swing in the sixth. He then struck out again to begin the ninth. Express closer Jon Edwards would go on to strike out the side in order picking up his seventh save.

The loss marked the first time the Sounds have been swept since Las Vegas performed the feat at Cashman Field during a four-game set from June 17-20, 2014.

After going 1-6 on the road trip, the Sounds (9-14) will be happy to get back to First Tennessee Park to face the Iowa Cubs (10-13) on Monday. Arnold Leon (0-0, 7.56 ERA) will make his first start since being sent back to Nashville from Oakland. Eric Jokisch (0-0, 5.25 ERA) is expected to get the ball for Iowa.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
