Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – The lesson that a two-way player is a necessary luxury has not been lost on Austin Peay State University’s baseball coaching staff.

They continued a recent trend towards signing two-way personnel with Landon Kelly, of Southaven, Mississippi, who signed a letter of intent during the early signing period.

Kelly is a 6-1, 190-pound utility man at Christian Brothers High School, where he plays infield and outfield and is a right-handed pitcher for head coach Buster Kelso.

He helped lead the Purple Wave to a 36-9 record last season and the TSSAA Division II Class AA State Championship. At the plate, Kelly went 4-for-9 with two RBI and four walks in four state tournament games.

It was the capstone to a junior campaign that saw Kelly post a .382 batting average and .500 on-base percentage with 15 RBI and 21 runs scored. He also showed plate discipline with only 17 strikeouts in 131 at-bats.

“We believe Landon has an opportunity to be a true “two-way” guy,” said Governors head coach Travis Janssen. “He can play in the infield but can also help us on the mound.  He’s a solid well-rounded baseball player.  He also had the opportunity to play for Team Tennessee last summer in the Sun Belt Games, which is a big honor.  We believe Landon has a very bright future and we’re excited to get him here to Austin Peay.”

During the summer, Kelly played for Team Tennessee in the Junior Sunbelt National Championship along with recent APSU signee Tucker Pate. That squad posted a 9-2 record and finished runner-up in a one-game playoff after winning the round-robin portion of the tournament. Kelly also played summer baseball with the Mid-South Gamers coached by Keegan Bumpous.
