Buchanan, TN – It was a smooth first day for Austin Peay State University men’s golf at the Skyhawk Classic, hosted by UT Martin at Paris Landing Golf Course. The Govs find themselves tied for fourth after Day One, with senior Erik Hedberg leading the way.
As a group, the Govs shot 583 (294-289), equaling Alabama State on the scoreboard.

“I think we played a little better today,” said head coach Robbie Wilson. “Unfortunately, we didn’t make enough birdies to compete at the top of the leaderboard, through a combination of not scoring on par-fives and not hitting short irons closer.”
Hedberg posted a 36-hole 143 (71-72), one-under par for the round and tied for fourth. It was the best 36-hole score of Hedberg’s career and equaled Justin Arens‘ first two rounds at the Inverness Intercollegiate for best by a Gov in 2016-17.
Arens (72-74) and junior Hunter Tidwell (75-71) were close behind Hedberg on the leaderboard, each taking a share of 14th with matching scores of 146. Tidwell’s second-round 71 was his first under par as a Governor.
Sophomore Sean Butscher enjoyed a solid outing, posting a 148 (76-72). His season-best 72 in the second round was part of Austin Peay’s 289 team score—the Govs best since the final round of the 2016 OVC Championships.
In his first start, sophomore Sam Lopez shot a 155 (77-78) from the No. 5 slot in the Governors lineup. Competing as individuals, freshmen Michael Busse (73-75=148) and Austin Lancaster (80-79=159) also posted solid outings for the Govs, with Busse’s showing accounting for the best 18- and 36-hole performances of his young career.
Tuesday’s final round begins with an 8:00am shotgun start from Paris Landing.
