APSU Softball loses at Ole Miss, 7-2

APSU SoftballOxford, MS – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball team saw Ole Miss get out to an 5-0 lead after two innings, Wednesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, and never could recover as the Govs dropped a 7-2 final to the Rebels.

The Governors (11-10) gave up three runs in the bottom of the first, on four hits, then an error opened the door for two unearned runs in the second inning to make it 5-0.

Austin Peay would get on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single by Bailey Shorter, driving in Natalie Schilling, who had reached on an infield single.

Shorter, Schilling, Carly Mattson and Kelsey Gross all finished the game with two hits for the Govs.

The score would remain that way until the fifth inning, when the Rebels pushed across a run to make it 6-1.

The Govs final run cam in the top of the sixth as Emily Moore was hit by a pitch with the bases load, forcing in Morgan Rackel.

Overall, the Govs stranded eight runners on base in the contest, including bases loaded in the third and sixth innings.

The Rebels closed out the game’s scoring with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Kelly Mardones (3-4) took the complete-game loss, pitching well after the rough first couple of innings, giving up only two runs over her last four innings of work.

Kelsey Gross extended her career-long hitting streak to eight games.

Carly Mattson’s two hits now gives her a team most nine multi-hit games this season.

Austin Peay is now 0-2 all-time versus Ole Miss

The Ole Miss game ends the longest streak of road, or neutral site games played by the Governors to open a season at 21.

Next Up For APSU Softball

The Governors will open the home part of its 2019 schedule, 2:00pm, this Sunday, March 10th as they host North Alabama for a doubleheader at Joe and Cathi Maynard Softball Stadium Cheryl Holt Field.
