APSU Baseball releases Govs Summer Update

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball team has several athletes playing on teams across the country as the summer collegiate baseball league season enters its final weeks as July comes to a close.

Incoming infielder Skyler Luna will join his Hays Larks teammates as they compete in the 84th National Baseball Congress World Series, starting Friday in Wichita, Kansas.

The Larks won the Kansas Collegiate Baseball League championship to earn a berth in the NBC World Series. Luna batted .280 during the KCBL season with a home run and six RBI in 14 games.

Designated hitter Matt Joslin will join the Dubois County Bombers when they compete in the Bluegrass World Series, August 7th-10th, at Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, Kentucky. He has posted three home runs, 20 RBI and a .395 on-base percentage in 27 games with the Bombers, who begin play in the Ohio Valley League’s postseason tournament, Friday.

Third baseman Gino Avros and pitcher Sebastian Martinez also helped lead their teams in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League to the championship tournament, which begins Thursday. Avros is batting .232 with two home runs and 12 RBI for the Gaithersburg Giants entering the postseason but boasts an impressive .476 on-base percentage thanks to 30 walks and 11 times hit by pitch. Martinez has four pitching appearance this season with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings worked.

A trio of Governors will see their Alaskan summer come to an end over the next week. Center fielder Garrett Spain and infielder Malcolm Tipler played for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. Spain enters the final week batting .254 with 13 RBI. Meanwhile, Tipler has posted a .379 on-base percentage thanks to 22 walks in 32 games. A few miles away, pitcher Nolan Monaghan has made seven appearances for the Mat-Su Miners with 13 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched.

Two weeks remain in the Coastal Plain League’s season with Govs pitcher Ryan Kouba and Tyler Thompson each on the roster for the South Division-leading Macon Bacon. Kouba has pieced together an impressive summer resume with a 4-1 record and 2.94 ERA in 11 appearances, striking out 42 batters over 33.2 innings. Thompson has six appearances with the Bacon this summer, striking out 10 batters over 12.2 innings and posting a 1.42 ERA.

A late addition to the Govs summer baseball roster, Bobby Head returned to Florida to play for the Winter Garden Squeeze of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. He has batted .246 with eight RBI and 11 walks in his 23 games.
