All ages are welcome and admission is free (donations encouraged, T-shirts and postcards available to purchase).

Tennessee State Parks Restaurants to feature Calorie Cards to Help Visitors Make More Healthy Food Choices

 

Tennessee State Parks 75th AnniversaryNashville, TN – Tennessee State Parks’ eight restaurants now prominently post calorie content information, allowing visitors and staff members to make informed decisions about their food choices. This partnership initiative of the Tennessee Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Conservation complements ongoing efforts to encourage personal fitness among Tennessee residents and visitors.

“After a day of hiking, golf, tennis, swimming or any of the other activities in our wonderful state parks, we can continue our healthy lifestyles by knowing the calorie content of foods available to us,” said Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH. “With this step, Tennessee State Parks position themselves to be an even stronger fitness destination for people who want to live healthier lives. More importantly, it helps Tennessee combat the growing problem of obesity and the many destructive health issues accompanying too much weight.”

Annual Cooling at The Cave to help celebrate Tennessee State Parks 75th Anniversery on Saturday, July 28th

 

Dunbar Cave State Natural AreaClarksville, TN – Every year the Friends of Dunbar Cave (FODC) sponsors the “Cooling at the Cave.”  The event is spearheaded by Barbara Wilbur, and is intended to be a throwback to simpler times, when folks would beat the heat by sitting near the mouth of the cave, enjoying the company of neighbors, listening to music, and the constant cool air of the cave. This year Cooling at the Cave will coincide with the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Tennessee State Parks on July 28th.

With entertainment provided by Cumberland Winds Dixie Band, which will perform Dixieland style music. Tables, chairs and board games will be provided by FODC, however, events goers are encouraged to bring their own to ensure they have a seat at this popular local event. Refreshments will be available for donations, which help offset the cost of the event.

NFL Play60 Campaign Encourages Young People to Lead Healthy Lifestyles

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – This spring Tennessee State Parks and the Tennessee Titans are partnering in a number of unique ways as part of the NFL Play60 effort, encouraging kids to stay active, eat healthy and become more physically fit – all while enjoying one of Tennessee’s great 53 state parks.

Tennessee is the first state park system to participate in the NFL Play60 campaign, which features outreach into local schools and communities to engage children with messages and activities that promote outdoor experiences, the natural world, healthy lifestyles and fun.
