Lady Govs shutout Freed-Hardeman in exhibition

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University women’s soccer team used a quick first-half spurt to take a 8-0 exhibition win against Freed-Hardeman, Friday night at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

Strong passing inside combined with a few well-placed serves from the midfield led to five first-half goals. The Lady Govs scored three more in the second half, including one off a corner kick.

If the first half was any indication, the Lady Govs should be expected to outperform even their own expectations. With two freshmen – Andy Quiceno and Emily Kink – flanking senior Monique Wong, Austin Peay was fluid moving the ball inside the box.

“It was a great opportunity to get our freshman some playing time out there,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “I’m very excited that we scored some goals and I was happy with the way we possessed the ball. It was a great confidence builder for our team. We have to think about VMI now and get ready for that one.”

The game’s first goal came from a corner kick by freshman Corey Osborne, which was picked up by senior Samantha Northrup, in the fourth minute. That goal set the tone for a dribbling score by freshman Joceline Quiceno – her first of two goals in the game.

Sophomore Jazzmine Chandler scored in the 10th minute on a shot from 20 yards inside midfield that went off the top post and past the keeper. Redshirt sophomore Jocelyn Murdoch scored in the 31st minute on a feed from Joceline Quiceno. Freshman Emily Kink, who managed a team-high eight shots, scored the final first-half goal in the 34th minute.

“Freed-Hardeman was good competition for us,” Guth said. “They battled hard and you could see that in the way the second half started.”

The second half was quiet until the 81st minute when senior Michelle Johnson hustled a free kick into the back of the net. Joceline Quiceno punched in her second goal in the 84th minute and sophomore Laurena Robinson made a spectacular header off a corner kick in the 88th minute to set the final margin.
