Tennessee Departments of Health and Agriculture host Food Safety Seminar that focuses on Produce Safety

New Federal Food Safety Modernization Act Highlighted

Tennessee Department of HealthNashville, TN – Food borne illness has increasingly been linked to contaminated produce like lettuce, tomatoes and cantaloupe.

America’s federal food safety laws have been updated with the goal of ensuring the United States’ food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it.

The Tennessee Departments of Health and Agriculture are hosting an educational seminar as part of the Tennessee Food Safety Task Force featuring experts discussing the problem, challenges, approaches and impact of the Food Safety Modernization Act on produce safety.

“Our goal is to educate people about foodborne illness related to produce and the current approaches and federal changes to reduce these risks,” said Deputy State Epidemiologist John Dunn, DVM, Ph.D. “We want Tennessee growers, manufacturers and food service workers to have the opportunity to hear from national experts to meet increasing food safety demands and provide the safest food supply possible to consumers.”

The Tennessee Food Safety Task Force Annual Seminar “Fresh Produce:  Challenges and Approaches to Food Safety” will be held May 9th from 9:00am until 4:00pm in the Ed Jones Auditorium at Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville. Topics will include timelines for the Food Safety Modernization Act; recent outbreaks of illness linked to fresh produce; current produce safety research; and ways growers, manufacturers and food service entities are adapting to changing food safety requirements.

The seminar is open to the public; registration is required, and attendance is limited to 180 people. Learn more about this event and find a registration form online at www.foodsafetytaskforce.org/PDF/Registration%20Form.pdf.
