Charleston, IL – Senior Chantelle Grey won her second Ohio Valley Conference 800m title this year and Austin Peay recovered from its Friday stumbles with an impressive Saturday showing at the 2013 OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Eastern Illinois.
After netting just a half point in Friday’s competition, the Lady Govs roared out of the gates Saturday and made up a lot of ground, finishing the meet with 44.5 points and an eighth-place finish.
Host Eastern Illinois won the event with 145.5 points, followed by Murray State (124), Southeast Missouri (115) and SIU Edwardsville (99).
Grey was victorious again in Charleston, site of her indoor triumph back in February. The Missoula, MT, native was nearly a second faster than her next closest competition, Saturday, finishing with a 2:10.85 run. Coupled with her 800m win at the indoor championships, Grey is the first runner since Eastern Illinois’ Megan Gingerich in 2010 to win both the indoor and outdoor 800m in the same year.
Sophomore Natalie Olberding barely missed her first OVC gold medal. After leading all qualifiers, she settled for second in the finals with a 1:01.37 mark.
A pair of Lady Gov sprinters brought home fourth-place finishes. Sophomore Erika Adams was fourth in the 100m dash with a 12.18 mark, while freshman Breigh Jones finished just off the podium with a 55.74 run. Jones also added to the Lady Govs point total with a seventh-place (25.51) run in the 200m dash.
After being disqualified in the 4x100m relay, the Lady Govs 4x400m team bounced back to take fourth place. Grey, Olberding, Jones and sophomore Taelor Slaughter put a 3:52.11 time.
Senior Jasmine Foster netted three points toward the Lady Govs total in the shot put; the Johnson City native’s 12.68m (41’ 7.25”) toss placed her sixth.
Senior Cenitra Hudson rounded out the scoring for Austin Peay with a seventh-place, 11.13m (36’ 6.25”) triple jump mark.
