Sevierville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team displayed improvement in the first round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and finds itself tied for eighth after Monday’s opening round, being played at The Sevierville Golf Club.Led by Jessica Cathey’s 75, the Lady Govs fired a 327, tying Presbyterian.
Murray State led after Day 1 with a 315, followed by Marshall two strokes back. Eastern Kentucky is third at 318, with West Georgia fourth (319), Indiana State fifth (320) with Belmont and Evansville tied for sixth (323) in the 13-team event. The tourney concludes Tuesday.
“It was cold, wet day and the course really played super long today,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “As a team, other than Jessica, we just had too many big numbers.”
Cathey finds herself in a fourth-place tie after overcoming a tough first hole to finish at 4-over, shooting a back nine 35 after firing 40 on the front. She became the first Lady Gov to break into the 70s as APSU attempts to overcome a preseason and early season of difficult weather.
“Jessica played great today,” Robson said. “She got a tough break on the first hole but she hit the ball well all day long,”
A pair of freshmen had APSU’s next best scores. Morgan Kauffman shot an 83 while Morgan Gardner came in at 84. Meanwhile, seniors Tala Mumford and Rachel Deaton came in at 85.
“I think the seniors will bounce back tomorrow,” Robson said. “It’s still going to be warmer and play long, but it should be a little warmer. As a team we need to hit a few more greens tomorrow and make a few more putts…and get rid of those big numbers.”
