Nashville Sounds nab 6-3 win at Iowa Cubs

Nashville Sounds Turn Season-High Four Double Plays

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Behind Brad Mills’ first victory of the season, the Sounds held on to beat the Iowa Cubs, 6-3, at Principal Park on Tuesday night.

Nate Freiman made productive outs to score the Sounds first two runs of the game. After a Kent Matthes double, he grounded out to plate shortstop Andy Parrino and then in the third inning he hit a sacrifice fly to score Craig Gentry. Gentry had stolen both second and third base to get in to scoring position.

The Sounds added another run in the sixth when Ryan Roberts drove in Jason Pridie with an RBI-double. The Cubs followed, cutting the lead to 3-2 via a Javy Baez solo homer.

Mills recorded his second quality start of the season, giving up eight hits, three earned runs and striking out five.

Jason Pridie gave the Sounds much needed insurance with a triple in the seventh. Matthes scored from third and Freiman chugged his 6-foot-8 250 pound frame all the way from first to narrowly avoid the tag at the plate. Roberts then drove Pridie in with a liner up the middle that give the Sounds a commanding 6-2 lead.

However, Iowa would not quit. Christian Villanueva led off the seventh with a solo shot off Mills, who would next give up a single to Taylor Davis. Seth Frankoff would come on and strikeout Chris Valaika before walking Adron Chambers, bringing the tying run to the plate.  Pitching Coach Don Schulze came out to talk to Frankoff and attempt to settle him down – it worked.

John Andreoli grounded to the former UNC-Wilmington pitcher who threw to Parrino, who then went to first to complete the inning-ending double play. It was the Sounds fourth double play turned during the game, a season-high.

Ryan Cook pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his third save. The Sounds are now 8-0 in games that he pitched in this season.

The Sounds (13-19) and Cubs (15-17) will have little time to recuperate. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 12:08pm. The expected pitching matchup is Ryan Verdugo (1-3, 4.00) against Donn Roach (4-0, 2.17).
