Clarksville, TN – Starting pitcher Caleb Powell threw a complete game, leading the Black Team to a 3-2 series-clinching victory in Austin Peay State University Baseball’s Red-Black World Series, Monday afternoon, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The Black Team added to its advantage one inning later when the Red Squad failed to convert a double-play opportunity. Designated hitter Andrew Flaherty tied the game with a single to left center and outfielder Landon Kelly went from first to home on the plate for a 2-0 lead.
Powell (1-0) would surrender his two runs in the third and fourth innings. Outfielder Brandon Kelley hit a one-out triple in the third, scoring on shortstop Garrett Giovannelli’s groundout to halve the lead. The next inning it was first baseman Dre Gleason‘js double that tied the game when it drove in designated hitter Chase Hamilton.
But Powell would not allow another run, facing just 10 batters over the final three innings and retiring the side in order in the fifth and seventh innings.
His scoreless streak allowed the Black Team to take advantage of another Red Squad miscue in the sixth. Shortstop Kyle Wilson led off the inning with a walk and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. The Black Team would not have to put a ball in play to take the lead as Wilson sprinted home after a wild pitch, supplying the winning run.
Powell allowed two runs while scattering five hits over seven innings. He walked two batters and struck out five.
The Black Team needed just three hits in the win, Flaherty and Robles each finishing with a hit and a RBI.
Starter Jordan Harmon (0-1) suffered the loss for the Red Squad after allowing three runs on three hits and two walks in six innings. Reliever Jacques Pucheu struck out a batter in a scoreless seventh inning outing.
Right fielder Max Remy led the Red Squad with a 2-for-3 outing. Giovannelli and Glason had the team’s lone RBIs.
Monday’s game concluded the Governors fall practice schedule. Austin Peay will return to the diamond when they open the 2017 schedule against Youngstown State, February 17th, 2017.
