Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team provided a clutch performance en route to earning its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season, defeating Eastern Illinois, 5-2, Saturday, at the Governors Indoor Tennis Center.
The Govs (2-15, 1-4 OVC) started out hot with the No. 1 doubles team of Almantas Ozelis and Aleh Drobysh picking up a win.
However, the Panthers (5-16, 1-5 OVC) struck back with a win at No. 3 doubles.
This left the No. 2 pairing of Chad Woodham and Evan Bottorff on the court needing a win to take the doubles point. The duo went up a break early and held on for a 6-4 win to give the Govs a 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Govs continued to pile on the pressure on the Panthers. Christian Edison produced one of his best performances of the year, winning at No. 2 singles over EIU’s Grant Reiman (6-1, 6-4). Timo Kiesslich was next to finish for the Govs, as he swept Gage Kingsmith at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-0).
It was fitting for the Govs that senior Aleh Drobysh, who was honored after the match on Senior Day, clinched the match for Austin Peay with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. The Govs also got a singles win from Jacob Lorino, who easily swept his opponent aside at No. 5 singles.
