Carbondale, IL – Kelsey Gray went 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in a run but it wasn’t enough, Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium, as the Austin Peay State University (APSU) Softball team fell 10-1 to Southern Illinois in a 10-inning contest to open its fall schedule.
Gray, who would be the only Gov to collect more than one hit in the contest, would drive in Emily Harkleroad — who reached on a one-out double to center field in the eighth inning.
Gray’s second hit of the game opened the 10th inning for the Govs.
Overall, the Govs were only outhit 10-9 by the Salukis — who finished their fall schedule 8-0 — but took advantage of three errors, seven walks and a hit batter by APSU in scoring their runs, while SIU didn’t commit an error in the contest and walked only two APSU hitters.
Defensively, the Govs turned three double plays in the contest, including a catch and throw out at the plate by centerfielder Kacy Acree to catcher Carly Mattson to end the third inning and a 6-4-3 double play in the fourth inning started by the Govs only freshman on the roster, Lexi Osowski.
The Govs will continue their fall schedule with a 10-inning contest at Evansville this Friday at Cooper Stadium beginning at 6:30pm.
