APSU Track and Field continues Coastal Carolina Invitational, Saturday

APSU Women's Track and FieldMyrtle Beach, SC – If there was any concern for Austin Peay State University (APSU) head track and field coach Doug Molnar after the Govs took some time off following the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships, those concerns were alleviated on day one at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, which kicked off Friday.

There was little question that the pole vaulters would perform admirably in their first outdoor attempts in 2019, and once again they lived up to expectations.

Senior Savannah Amato kicked off her final outdoor campaign in midseason form, hitting 3.95m to win the jumpoff against teammate Dascha Hix after the duo tied at 3.80m. Hix took runner-up honors.

Also in the field portion of the day, it appears Maya Perry-Grimes enjoys spending her time in Myrtle Beach. After setting a personal-best in the triple jump here a year ago, Perry-Grimes’ 5.71m mark in the long jump won the event Friday and was the longest by a Gov since 2017.

On the track, Friday was notable from an individual standpoint for senior Emmaculate Kiplagat, who placed fourth in the 5000m run with an 18:10.99 mark. In relay action, Austin Peay swept the 4x200m event, with the quartet of Kyra Wilder, Tiyanna Johnson, Sabrina Richman and Lennex Walker posting a school-record 1:38.88 mark in a quirky event, midway between the NCAA-standard 4×100 and 4x400m relays.

Another Austin Peay quartet—Molly Howard, Maddie Morstad, Mikaela Smith and Keleah Shell—set a record en route to a runner-up finish in another in-betweener in the 4x800m event with a 9:31.38 mark.

The Govs will be back in action Saturday, with the bulk of the track events still remaining. The women’s 3000m kicks things off at 8:30am (CT), while the high jump gets the field events going at 9:00am.
