Springfield, MO – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s golf found itself unable to rise in the final round of the 2019 Payne Stewart Memorial, holding solid in 10th at Twin Oaks Country Club.
After a final-round 307, the Governors second-round 313 hurt all the more; just six fewer shots—equal to their final-round showing—in the second round would’ve put the Govs ahead of South Dakota, while three fewer shots (i.e., the first-round total) also would’ve put the Govs in eighth ahead of McNeese State.
Thanks largely to an eight-under team score, Oral Roberts took the tournament title.
Sophomore Taylor Dedmen put together the best round by a Gov in the tournament, posting a final-round 73 to place 21st overall (77-75-73—225); she shot a one-under 34 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 8 as part of a solid final round.
Senior Meghann Stamps and junior Riley Cooper tied for 42nd with matching 232 scores. Stamps (76-78-78) was bitten by the bogey bug in the final round, with eight marring an otherwise impressive effort in her senior debut. Cooper (76-80-76) birdied the par-4 at No. 5, which played as the fifth-hardest hole in Tuesday’s final round.
Sophomore Shelby Darnell (75-80-80—235; 51st) and junior Andrea Presilla (83-82-81—246; t-66th) rounded out the day for the Govs. Presilla served as the only Gov aside from Dedmen to show round-over-round improvement in every round at Twin Oaks.
The Govs will forge ahead into the MSU Greenbrier Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky, next week for Morehead State’s annual fall event at Greenbrier Country Club, September 16th-17th.
