APSU Women’s Golf in second heading into final round of Greenbrier Invitational

APSU Women's GolfLexington, KY – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s golf can be a formidable foe, as it proved Monday over the opening 36 holes at the MSU Greenbrier Invitational at Greenbrier Country Club.

With 18 holes remaining, the APSU Govs are second at 614 (305-309), eight shots behind Lipscomb and one shot up on Belmont. Tennessee Tech (621) and Morehead State (626) round out an Ohio Valley Conference-centric top-five.

A second-round 71—tied for low round of the tournament—has senior Meghann Stamps one shot off the overall lead at 145 (74-71) behind only Lipscomb’s Emily Keeling. She parred all nine holes of the front nine in round two, then canned birdies on No. 12 and No. 17 for her one-under second-round showing. A difficult 378-yard par-4, No. 17 was among the toughest hole on Monday at Greenbrier Country Club.

Sophomores Taylor Dedmen and Shelby Darnell are both inside the top-10 with matching 153s after 36 holes. Dedmen’s opening-round 74 had her in the top-five after 18 holes and buoyed her through a late-round malaise during the afternoon round, which ended with a 79. Darnell (77-76) battled to maintain her spot near the top of the leaderboard, and is one of just two players in the top-10 to have had her first and second round scores within a stroke or less of one another.

“I’m just beyond proud of how Meghann played all day long,” said Austin Peay State University head coach Jessica Cathey. “Her attitude was something we strive to have each round. I hope she can keep that going, that momentum, tomorrow.”

“Shelby had a couple bad holes, but turned it around in round two. Everyone had a little mental lapse in judgement, but we talked about staying focused and I love the mindsight we’re taking into the final round,” Cathey stated.

Juniors Riley Cooper (80-83—163; t-32nd) and Andrea Presilla (84-83—167; 41st) rounded out the day for the Govs, with Cathey eager to see what Tuesday holds.

“I was really proud of how they fought today,” she said. “It was a grind for a few of them, but they powered through. It can always be better, we’ll always feel like there were a couple of strokes left out there, but we’re in great shape for tomorrow.

“Eight shots is two shots per person, which is totally doable. Some putts didn’t fall our way today and that could go our way tomorrow. We’ll go out with the mentality of champions and hopefully be holding that trophy at the end of the day.”

The APSU Govs will be paired with Lipscomb and Belmont in the top group for Tuesday’s final round. Austin Peay State University tees it up at 8:15am (CT) on holes No. 1-5.
