Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – It had been since the 1991-92 season that an Ohio Valley Conference basketball player scored 50 or more points in a game.

That changed Monday night. Tennessee Tech senior guard Kevin Murphy, the preseason OVC Player of the Year, knocked down 16 of 21 field goals, including six three pointers, along with 12-of-14 free-throw attempts for 50 points as the Golden Eagles roasted SIU Edwardsville, 98-80. That victory avenged the Golden Eagle, December 29th loss at SIUE.

APSU Men’s Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCookeville, TN – After sitting on top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings since early December, Austin Peay now must concentrate on fixing “what ails it” while gaining a different perspective–a second place perspective–as it travels to Tennessee Tech, 7:00pm, Monday for its third league game in six days.

The Governors are coming off a disappointing 67-58 loss to Murray State in front of a packed Dunn Center. The Govs and Morehead State, now 9-4 in the OVC, sit behind the Racers, who are 9-3.

Governors return home looking to rebound vs. Tennessee Tech

APSU Men’s Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay will attempt to rebound literally and figuratively from its first Ohio Valley Conference defeat when Tennessee Tech comes to town, 6:00pm, Thursday for an ESPNU telecast.

The Governors are hoping to bounce back after losing in overtime to Tennessee State, 76-74, Saturday in Nashville. It was a contest the Governors could not finish off after leading by seven with 1:18 remaining.

And rebounding, or lack thereof, proved to be a deciding factor in the defeat as TSU out-rebounded the Governors, 52-37, including 20 offensive grabs. A TSU offensive rebound tied the game in regulation and another offensive snatch helped give the Tigers a four-point overtime lead.

Rapidly-improving Tennessee State next up for Governors

APSU Men’s Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – If Austin Peay’s 6-0 Ohio Valley Conference start is the No. 1 league story so far in 2010-11 season. The second-best story undoubtedly is Tennessee State.

Picked to finish seventh in the OVC preseason poll, the Tigers are off to an impressive 4-2 start, their only losses on the road at Eastern Illinois and Murray State, and they sit in a third-place tie. The Tigers, however, have an overtime decision against Morehead State on their resume this season.

The Tigers will play host to the Governors, 3:00pm, Saturday, in the Gentry Center for an ESPNU audience. Second-year coach John Cooper has his young Tigers rapidly moving forward.
