Unique opportunity for emerging artists at the Customs House Museum

Emerging artists now have a new place to exhibit in Clarksville. The Customs House Museum is opening up its Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery to visual artists 18 years and older. A prospectus of requirements for submissions can be picked up at the museum lobby desk or downloaded from the museum’s website. Proposals may be submitted between June first and August first only. Accepted artists will receive a two-month exhibit.

Terri Jordan, Exhibits Curator, says the museum is looking forward to hosting art done in a variety of styles and mediums. “There are some very talented artists from across the state, and we are happy to be able to give them one more place to show off their work. The museum has showcased group exhibits for the past several years, including the Friends of Photography, Artz, and Kaleidoscope . The Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery is a perfect size for one-man displays, both 2-D and 3-D works.” Based on the success of the recent contemporary exhibition, Modern Girls, Jordan hopes to see some innovative work submitted for consideration.

The Customs House Museum is the second largest general museum in Tennessee, with an average visitation of forty thousand guests a year. Along with fine art, the museum features exhibits themed in history, science, and local interests. Exhibits currently on display in April include polymer dolls by Ludie Amos, photography by Jim Hancock, and opening April 23rd, a regional-based show, Gone Fishing. Jordan says upcoming exhibits for 2010 include a military themed exhibit, pleine air paintings by the prestigious Chestnut Group, and An American Tradition, based on tobacco farming. Permanent exhibits found at the Customs House include the popular model trains, and the Lucy Dunwoody Boehm Porcelain collection. One major attraction in the Explorers’ Gallery, the Bubble Room, is currently being transported into the new Bubble Cave.
