Mobile, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss at South Alabama, Friday, in the first of two spring break matches.
It was the Lady Govs second-straight 4-3 loss, after falling to Kennesaw State, Monday. This time, however, the Lady Govs lost the doubles point, but won three of six singles.
At No. 1 doubles, junior Vanja Tomic and freshman Kimberly Loo lost a tough 9-7 match. It was Tomic and Loo’s first loss since teaming up at No. 1 for the first time at Southeast Missouri. That loss, combined with the defaulted No. 3 match, wiped out a convincing 8-1 win by sophomore Carolin Weikard and freshman Andra Cornea at No. 2.In singles action, Tomic won a straight-set win at No. 1, along with straight-set wins by freshman Rachel Margolies at No. 4 and Loo at No. 5. The Jaguars, however, came away with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, while also getting a defaulted win at No. 6.
The match clincher, in fact, came at No. 3 singles where Chane Hines defeated Cornea in a second-set tiebreaker.
Austin Peay wraps up its spring break swing with a 10:00am, Saturday, match in Pensacola, FL, against BYU Hawaii.
