Tomic, Lady Govs Tennis fall to UT Martin

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to UT Martin, Thursday, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

The Lady Govs lost an emotionally exhausting doubles match at No. 2, allowing the Skyhawks to win the point. This was after sophomore Carolin Weikard and freshman Kimberly Loo made quick work of UTM’s Jodie Tiley and Anna Marie Herbold at No. 1. Junior Vanja Tomic and freshman Andra Cornea, followed with a 9-7 loss at No. 2.

From there, Tomic would go on to lose her first career OVC match, falling in straight sets to Tiley at No. 1. Freshman Rachel Margolies took advantage of an opportunity to play at No. 2 singles, handing Alice Laing a straight-set loss. Meanwhile, Weikard rolled to a win at No. 3 singles and Loo won in straight sets at No. 5.

“This is a tough loss for our team,” head coach Malik Tabet said. “We didn’t execute and we made too many mental mistakes. Now we have to get ready for Eastern Illinois and finish the season strong.”

The Lady Govs will have to move on quickly as they are set to host Eastern Illinois, 2:00pm, Saturday at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.
