Late EKU goal sinks Lady Govs Soccer

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team allowed a late-game goal to fall 2-1 at Eastern Kentucky, Friday, in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The loss puts the Lady Govs (9-7-1;3-4-1) OVC in a must-win situation, Sunday, when they travel to Morehead State for the season-finale. The situation will be made more clear following the completion of Friday’s OVC schedule. Jacksonville State plays at Southeast Missouri, Tennessee Tech plays at UT Martin and Murray State plays at Morehead State.

For the second-straight OVC game, the Colonels (7-8-3; 5-2-1 OVC) benefitted from an own goal to take an early lead. In the 37th minute, the ball deflected off an Austin Peay defender, into the Lady Govs net, to give Eastern Kentucky a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Govs kept composure and were able to equalize soon after. Sophomore Joceline Quiceno, who made her return from injury after missing three games, scored a 44th-minute goal on a pass from sophomore Natalia Ariza.

Natalia ArizaWith a 1-1 game heading into the final minutes, the Lady Govs came up short on an opportunity in the 78th minute when sophomore Tatiana Ariza’s shot was blocked. The ensuing corner kick was cleared out, erasing Austin Peay’s chance to tie the game.

Eastern Kentucky scored the gamewinner in the 85th minute, on a rebounded shot fired into the upper quadrant.

The Colonels outshot Austin Peay, 20-8, for the game, holding Tatiana Ariza to only one attempt. APSU sophomore Haylee Shoaff made seven saves.
