The Governors shot rounds of 309-308 and their 617 has them sitting in 10th place heading into Sunday’s final round on the par 72, 6,884-yard layout.

Virginia Tech, ranked 34th nationally, has a commanding 10-shot lead over East Carolina after shooting a two-round (577-291-286).

After struggling with six double bogeys plus a triple in the first round, the Govs settled down to have just a trio of double bogeys in the second but the round was singed by a triple and a quad. Even No. 1 player, junior Austin Kramer, struggled in the first round with a 79, unable to gain a single birdie while being hurt by a pair of doubles and a trio of bogeys.

But the Knoxville native bounced in the afternoon to shoot the Govs’ only subpar round with a 2-under 70, knocking in a trio of birdie putts with just one bogey. His 149 leaves him tied for 14th overall.

“El Campeón gave us all we could handle today,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “It is such a tough tournament course. Aside from Kramer’s second round our guys didn’t play close to their best.

“I was happy to see Austin come back and play well in the afternoon.”

Fellow junior Chris Baker had the Govs’ second lowest round and that was a 75 during Saturday’s morning round while senior Tucker Wallace, junior Tyler Phillips and freshman Justin Arens all had 78 in the opening round.

In the afternoon, after Kramer’s 70 the next best scores were 79s while the Govs also had to count an 80.

“We expect a better effort tomorrow and will try to leave Florida on a positive note.”
