Nashville Sounds hand Memphis Redbirds 4-1 loss at First Tennessee Park

Standing Room Only Crowd Of 11,043 Marks Third-Largest At First Tennessee Park

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Sounds jumped all over the Redbirds early on Saturday night and held on for a 4-1 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 11,043 at First Tennessee Park.

The packed house was the 17th sellout in the inaugural season at First Tennessee Park. The win gives Nashville an 8-7 lead in The Tennessee Lottery I-40 Cup series with the final game set for tomorrow evening.

The home team put up a two spot on the scoreboard in the first inning courtesy of their third home run of the series. Jake Smolinski took his turn trotting around the bases when he stayed back on a John Gast changeup and just cleared the right field wall. Joey Wendle scored on Smolinski’s seventh home run during Triple-A play this season and the Sounds were off to a 2-0 lead.

Wendle and the Sounds kept the line moving with runs in the second and third. Andy Parrino and Carson Blair singled before the second baseman drove a RBI groundout to first.

Nashville’s next run in the third came after Jason Pridie walked, stole his 18th base of the season and was driven home two batters later on a Rangel Ravelo sacrifice fly.

Ravelo’s third RBI in his third Triple-A game advanced the score to 4-0. Four runs proved to be ample support for Cody Martin.

Since being traded from Atlanta in early July, the 25-year-old had struggled to grasp his groove on the mound with Nashville. He found that groove on Saturday night, holding Memphis to five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He worked around four walks and struck out six to acquire his first win in a Sounds uniform.

Nashville’s relief corps put up zeros after Martin was taken out. Phil Coke blanked the ‘Birds over 1 2/3 hitless innings, getting a double play to end the sixth. Ryan Dull struck out one in the eighth and Angel Castro posted his third save of the season by tossing the ninth.

Nashville and Memphis conclude their five-game series on Sunday evening at First Tennessee Park. The Sounds have Brad Mills (4-10, 4.09) waiting in line for Nick Greenwood (10-3, 5.13) and the Redbirds in the series finale. Game time is slated for 6:35pm. Gates open at 5:05pm. in advance of the Sounds’ final Faith Night of the season, featuring a pre-game concert by Citizen Way.
