LEAP Youth hold Car Wash and Bake Sale fundraiser
A car wash was $5.00 and the bake sale goodies ranged from $0.50 to $2.00. “We do a lot of outings with the kids to teach them that nothing is free in the world. So we had them put together a couple of fundraisers to help pay for the trips they will be going on throughout the year,” said Malcolm Luster, LEAP Counselor. The young adults eagerly washed the cars that stopped by knowing that each donation got them one step closer to raising enough money for a trip to Beech Bend Park. When asked about the type of trips LEAP will be taking the kids on, Malcolm stated, “We will be taking the kids to Tie Breaker Family Aquatic Center, some museums and to Chicago. We are also going to some of the surrounding major cities like Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville to do a little history on things like music, masonry and things of those natures.” LEAP has a culinary class during their summer program. So the kids cooked all of the items for the bake sale themselves. Some of the items for sale were: red velvet cupcakes, vanilla cupcakes, double chocolate chip cupcakes and brownies. The double chocolate chip cupcakes were delicious. Christopher Allen and Kaylynn Ogle were captains for the event and helped organize and run everything. “It was good to be out here today to raise money so we can go on our trips,” said Christopher Allen. “It was a fun and exciting day.” When asked about organizing the event, Ogle said, “It was not easy. We had organize everything and get everything together. It was a lot of work, but it was a good experience.” LEAP Youth enjoy innovative and fun workshops where they will both learn and apply essential life skills including leadership, self esteem, etiquette, team building, financial management, etc. “We have a lot of youth enrichment programs here. We have at risk youth, those that have truancy issues. So we do one on one counseling and group sessions just to help direct their path,” Luster stated. There will be another car wash and bake sale held next Friday, July 29th at LEAP Plaza. It will be from 11:00am until 2:00pm or until the last vehicle is served. “We’d love for everyone to come out and support our youth and help them raise money for their Beech Bend Park trip,” said Luster.
