APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team could not get on track and dropped its Ohio Valley Conference series finale against Southeast Missouri, 20-4, Saturday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (17-11, 7-5 OVC) still clinched the series victory by virtue of winning both games of Friday’s doubleheader.

The Governors jumped into a tie for third place with the series win and will face Belmont – the team they are tied with – in next weekend’s OVC series.

Southeast Missouri (11-17, 8-4 OVC) wasted little time jumping out to a big lead, sending 10 men to the plate in the first inning and scoring five times. Shortstop Connor Basler delivered two runs with a two-out double just before the inning ended.

The Redhawks also hit four home runs in the contest, including center fielder Danny Wright’s grand slam as part of five-run fourth inning that broke the game open.

Austin Peay starter Devin O’Donovan (1-1) faced three batters, each scoring, before departing and was left with the loss. Six other Govs pitchers followed O’Donovan on the mound and combined for 12 strikeouts in nine innings.

Garrett Giovannelli, making his first start at second base this season, had three hits to extend his hit streak to 14 games and his reached safely streak to 34 games. Reserve third baseman Max Remy added two hits and a RBI off the bench.

Wright finished the day 3-for-5 with five RBI while Basler and left fielder Chase Urhahn each had four hits. Redhawks starter Carlos Vega limited Austin Peay to one run over six innings to notch the victory.

Kueber Streak Paused
Shortstop Garrett Kueber missed Saturday’s contest due to injury – putting his own impressive reached base safely streak, which now stands at 26 games, on hold.

Tipler Streak Now At 12
Third baseman Malcolm Tipler followed Giovannelli’s double with a RBI single in the first inning. The base hit extended his hit streak to 12 games, just behind Giovannelli’s streak.
