APSU earns 11 OVC Medals of Honor; two team captured OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards

 

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University student-athletes earned 11 Ohio Valley Conference Medals of Honor while two teams, women’s golf and men’s tennis, captured OVC Team Academic Awards, announced Thursday by the conference office.

The Medal of Honor is awarded annually to student-athletes who achieve the highest grade-point average in a conference-sponsored sport.  Each one of the APSU recipients held a 4.0 grade-point average in their respective sport for the year.  Heading the list is a pair of senior women’s track and field ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans, Carrie Burggraf (first team) and Shamai Larsen (second team). Former high school dropout evolves into Academic All-American

APSU Governors Logo“No one would believe that back home,” said 2nd Lt. Shamai Larsen, who recently earned the award after being a two-year member of Austin Peay State University’s cross country and track teams.

Why would people in Dillingham, Alaska be surprised?

Larsen was a high school dropout.

“The town I grew up in was small, 2,500 people,” said Larsen, who graduated from Austin Peay and was commissioned by the Army in May. “There are really no roads in and out-you have to fly. There were 140 students in my high school and I was in a class of about 25. It was really a tough way to grow up.  You really don’t get to experience the outside world.  It also was dark a lot during the winter time.” «Read the rest of this article»

Burggraf selected first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America; Larsen earns second team honors

 

APSU Governors LogoCarrie Burggraf, Austin Peay State University’s much-decorated record-setting pole vault student-athlete, has earned yet another award. Burggraf has been named first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® in Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Burggraf becomes Austin Peay’s first first-team Academic All-America selection since Jordan Richardson was named first-team Academic All-America in 2005. Burggraf was named second-team Academic All-America a year ago.

In addition, Lady Govs cross country and track distance performer Shamai Larsen was second-team Academic All-America. «Read the rest of this article»

Track athletes Burggraf, Larsen named to CoSIDA Academic All-District first-team

 

APSU Governors LogoAustin Peay State University women’s track and field seniors Carrie Burggraf and Shamai Larsen were each named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District IV First Team as selected by CoSIDA, the association announced, Wednesday.

Burggraf, a Marion, Ohio native, finished her career with a 4.0 grade-point average and earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and history.

Off the field, Burggraf recently became the first Ohio Valley Conference student-athlete to receive the Steve Hamilton Award – the annual award is based upon significant athletics performance along with good sportsmanship and citizenship – twice during their career. She also was awarded the prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, which is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

On the field, Burggraf posted a 13-05 pole vault in the OVC outdoor championships, shattering her own OVC championship record and claiming her sixth championship. She also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships for a third consecutive season. «Read the rest of this article»
