Dodging the Roadkill: Can You Hear The Peace And Quiet

Dodging the Roadkill - A Biker's JourneyClarksville, TN – The title of this post sounds like an oxymoron, but I think if bikers read it, they’ll know what I mean.  For me anyway, when I’m rumbling down the highway, I can hear the peace and quiet inside of me.  Calm as a clam, cool as the other side of the pillow.

It’s that “Peace” you have within you while riding, and there’s a “quiet” calm inside of you that controls the chaos outside of you.

It’s the motorcycle experience.

With so much around you, your confidence and calming approach to biking maintains your attitude for the experience.

Traveling long distances gives me the opportunity to think quite a bit about my life, and now, my destination.  I’m constantly thinking about my next trip, or my next article, or my next life choice.  But while I’m paying attention to the “concert” I’m hearing OUTSIDE, on the inside of me is a peace and quiet that is rapturous.

I’ve never been so calm as when I’m riding my motorcycle.  As my physical skills have improved, I tend to focus on what’s on the inside.  I’m calm down there.  I’m at peace down there.  The whole experience of riding the motorcycle is such a mixture of feelings and emotions.

Your adrenaline is pumping, your heart is racing, your muscles are on ‘point’ and every part of the body wants to participate.

My eyes give me the visual orgasm I’m looking for.  Cars whizzing by, beautiful back country roads, rolling hills, farmers working the fields.  My eyes want to capture it all.

The squirrel that darts out in front of me.  Which way will he go?  Hope he makes a good decision.

Those birds in the middle of the road.  When will they fly away from their roadkill buffet?   All of that going on inside and outside, for me, is what riding is all about.  If all of your senses AREN’T hitting on all cylinders, then what’s the point?

When I was traveling across Kansas, coming from Colorado, all I had was my bike, my music and me.

“ME” got a lot of attention.

I tend to do a lot of self evaluation during these long trips.  I’m very hard on myself, always have been, but deep down inside, I’m at peace with where I am and what I’m doing.  There’s such irony in what that’s all about.

I can hear it.  It makes me who I am.  Touched by the feeling and grateful for the journey.

Listen to your inner self, whether you’re old school or new, sportster or bagger.  It’s not just loud pipes and “one down, five up”

It’s there, can you hear it?
