Fort Campbell – A Fort Campbell Soldier died Thursday at Combat Outpost Garda in the Nerkh District of Afghanistan from injuries sustained from insurgent small-arms fire.
Specialist Russell S. Hercules Jr., 22, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., was an infantryman assigned to F Company, 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade. He joined the Army in June 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in October 2008.

Hercules’ awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal (2 awards); Army Good Conduct Medal; Army Commendation Medal (2 awards); National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Ribbon; NATO Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; and Weapons Qualification: M4-(expert).
He is survived by his wife and son, Victoria and Christopher, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; mother and stepfather, Cheryl and Denver, also of Murfreesboro; and father, Russell Hercules Sr., of Winchester, Tenn.
A memorial service for the fallen Soldier will be held in Afghanistan. Fort Campbell will hold an Eagle Remembrance Ceremony in November.
