Chi Omega SororityClarksville, TN – The Sigma Kappa chapter of Chi Omega Women’s Fraternity turns 40 this year. In May of 1972, the Sigma Tao Omega sorority was granted an official charter from Chi Omega, becoming the first national sorority on Austin Peay’s campus.

Since then, through the national organization, this Chi Omega chapter has raised nearly $50,000 for the Make-A-Wish foundation and has donated thousands of volunteer hours to local charities and organizations.

Throughout the last 40 years, the Sigma Kappa chapter has initiated nearly 800 Chi Omega members. Among them are many community leaders including charter member Priscilla Garrett Story who will be speaking at the event. She was the first official Chi Omega president at Austin Peay.

The committee is hopeful that nearly all of the 20 charter members will be able to attend the event, as well as some of the Sigma Tao Omega members who were instrumental in bringing Chi Omega to campus. “Each charter member will receive a hand crafted invitation because we want to honor them,” said Shelby Stack Silvey, alumna and local attorney. “We are relying heavily on press, Facebook, and word of mouth so that we can reach as many sisters as possible.”

They are celebrating with a brunch for all current members and alumnae on April 28th at First Baptist Church, downtown. The chair of the event is Lynne Waters Griffey, charter member, retired Montgomery County School System teacher, and well known local artist. She has created a special owl print that will serve as a gift for each sister in attendance.

Alumna Amie Bagwell Wilson says of the event, “When I think of my years in college, Chi Omega is what comes to mind first. I am looking forward to seeing sisters I haven’t seen in a long time and catching up with them. Chi Omega gave me lifelong friends and I am excited to meet new sisters as well.”

For more information about the event and to RSVP, members should go to www.sigmakappa40th.com, email sigmakappa40th@gmail.com or call Lynne Waters Griffey at 931.648.3149.
