Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will closeout its season long eight-game homestand at Cheryl Holt Field this weekend, as they host Murray State University for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference Western Division series.
The series will begin with a noon doubleheader on Saturday and conclude with a single game on Sunday, also scheduled to begin at noon.
Austin Peay (18-21, 6-7 OVC) is 2-3 so far in the homestand, but the two wins have been the last two contests – a 6-3 victory over Tennessee Tech in Game 2 of last Sunday’s doubleheader and a Wednesday 8-0 win over former OVC member Middle Tennessee.
Murray State (21-18, 8-5 OVC) enters the series on a bit of a roll, winning six of their last eight games, including a sweep of Evansville on Thursday.
Offensively, the Lady Govs are led by senior Lauren de Castro, who enters the series hitting at an even .400 with nine doubles, five home runs and 24 RBI.
Sophomore Mel Pavel is still continuing to flirt with the .300 mark 39 games into the season, coming in with a .291 batting average, with six doubles, a home run and 20 RBI.
Senior Kayla Davidson has also seen her average climb the past month after a slow start to her 2014 season and comes in hitting at a .287 clip – including a team best 10 doubles to go with a triple, three home runs and 24 RBI.
Maggie Glass comes in just under the .300 mark at .297, with three doubles, two triples, four home runs and 12 RBI.
Leading the Lady Govs pitching staff is de Castro and her 12-8 win-loss record, including coming off her fifth shutout of the season Wednesday against Middle Tennessee, an a 3.29 ERA. She has recorded 81 strikeouts in 115 innings of work this season
CheyAnne Gaskey (8-10, 3.78 ERA) leads the Racer pitchers in wins, while Mason Robinson (7-6, 3.01 ERA) and J.J. Francis (6-2, 3.74 ERA) are right behind her, both posting solid seasons in the circle.
